Parish meeting decided to build a hall as the commemoration of\u00a0 Ash of Queen Victoria\u2019s diamond jubilee. All parishes in England were expected to mark this anniversary in some way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1897<\/strong> \u2013 December 8<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 Foundation Stone laid by Dr H.M. Chester of Poyle Park<\/p>\n<p><strong>1898<\/strong> \u2013 June 1<sup>st<\/sup> \u2013 Hall officially opened by Lady Pirbright of Henley Place<\/p>\n<p><strong>1900<\/strong> \u2013 July 25<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 Clock presented by Dr Chester in memory of his mother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1904<\/strong> \u2013 Dr Chester gave the land on which the small halls are now built. One was initially fitted as a billiard room.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1906<\/strong> \u2013 James Payne retired from the committee<\/p>\n<p><strong>1909<\/strong> \u2013 A small fire in the hall was put out by the timely intervention of Mr W Denyer, the caretaker<\/p>\n<p><strong>1909<\/strong> \u2013 During this year the billiards room was redecorated, a rifle range was installed and a reading room set up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1916-15.<\/strong> Alfred Payne supervised classes in such subjects as poultry, gardening, home nursing, carpentry, drawing and shorthand and typing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1920s<\/strong> \u2013 Women\u2019s Pleasant Hour held on Tuesday afternoons<\/p>\n<p><strong>1924<\/strong> &#8211; The Christadelphians began using the hall as a meeting place<\/p>\n<p><strong>1926<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 A library opened in the hall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1927<\/strong> \u2013 Mr W Frewin retired from the committee<\/p>\n<p><strong>1937<\/strong> \u2013 Clock weights lost down the well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1938<\/strong> \u2013 Hall used to issue gas masks<\/p>\n<p><strong>1938<\/strong> \u2013 Heathcote School held an open day which finished at the hall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1940<\/strong> \u2013 Hall used as a school for evacuees<\/p>\n<p><strong>1945<\/strong> \u2013 Youth Club established<\/p>\n<p><strong>1944<\/strong> \u2013 Aldershot and District Table Tennis league began. Ash Victoria Hall had a team<\/p>\n<p><strong>1947<\/strong> \u2013 Weekly dances began featuring the Bob Potter and Billy Richard bands<\/p>\n<p><strong>1950<\/strong> \u2013 Performance by The Ash Vale Players &#8211; \u201cWhen We Were Married\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>1958<\/strong> \u2013 Ash Common School ceases to use the hall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1962<\/strong> \u2013 Ash Parish Garden Club formed and began meeting at the hall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1963<\/strong> \u2013 Joyce Thornton took over as caretaker and bookings manager.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1971<\/strong> \u2013 Joyce Thornton began a youth club which ran for three years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1979<\/strong> \u2013 Ash Citizens Advice Bureau opened.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1988<\/strong> &#8211; Ash Citizens Advice Bureau moved to The Ash Centre<\/p>\n<p><strong>1997<\/strong> \u2013 100 year old time capsule recovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2000<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0 New time capsule buried in the kitchen wall<\/p>\n<p><strong>2014<\/strong> \u2013 Following a complaint by a neighbour the chimes of the clock were silenced between 11pm and 7am.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2020<\/strong> &#8211; The hall closed its door for 3 months during the Covid-19 pandemic<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1897 \u2013 May 4th.
