Down at the hall, PALS are entering the final stages of rehearsals for their summer show and lots of girls and boys are preparing for their dance show and for exams. Good luck to you all. The PALS production is called “Help the Aged”, it is a comedy written by local lady Susan Morton Freke. The production will run from 22-23 June and tickets are available here.

The final quiz night of the season last Friday was a great success with £362 being raised for f4t, a local charity helping young people with music.

It has been a quiet couple of weeks at the hall with just the usual regular clubs meeting and a couple of birthday parties. Rehearsals are well under way for the next PALS production. Called “Help the Aged”, it is a comedy written by local lady Susan Morton Freke. The production will run from 22-23 June and tickets are available here.

The quiz night on Friday was a great success with £411 being raised for Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and an enjoyable evening of brain searching had by all. The next quiz will be on Friday June 8th at 7.30. Do come and join us.

The charity quiz on Friday night was a great success as always and lots of fun was had by all. The event raised £300 for the Brain Tumour Charity , who are based in Farnborough. The next quiz, in aid of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, is on Friday May 4th.
The date for the charity concert has now been rescheduled to September but Dave and Mick are still looking for acts so please get in touch via the contacts page of the website if you would like to take part.

Dave Brown and Mick Hills are organising a charity concert in the summer for which they are looking for acts. They are hopeful that many of the groups who use the hall will have some hidden talent which they would be prepared to bring out to raise money for The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice. Any sort of performance at any level will be appreciated – no nasty auditions or trials. The emphasis is on fun and community participation. We have several groups who already perform – singers, musicians and dancers and who knows what others may be able to do. The provisional date is June 30th; there will be a licensed bar and two or three acts have already pledged their support. Please get in touch if you would like to join in. Mick will be putting together the programme and, as he will need to get in touch with you about arrangements, will temporarily hold your email address.

About twelve people attended the first defibrillator training session at the hall today and all agreed it was a good meeting and very useful to understand how the machine works. There is a second session at 6pm on Thursday 15th and we would love a representative from all the groups who use the hall on a regular basis to undertake the training so please come if you can. No need to book – just turn up. The trainers have left some instructional DVDs with the committee so please get in touch if you would like to borrow one.

Last Friday’s quiz night was a great success with 13 teams enjoying a great evening’s quizzing to raise money for the British Heart Foundation, which is the Mayor of Guildford’s charity this year. Fittingly, the mayor’s team won the quiz which raised over £400.

As promised training in the use of the defibrillator has been arranged. The dates and times are: Monday 12th March at 2pm in the main hall and Thursday 15th March at 6pm – hall to be confirmed. No need to book; just turn up. The session should take a maximum of 30 minutes and there will be time for questions afterwards.

Quite a few people have expressed an interest in being shown how to use the defibrillator so we will be setting up some training sessions soon. Dates and times will be posted here as soon as they are fixed.

Friday’s quiz night was a great success with ten teams fighting it out for the honour of taking first place. The entry fees along with the proceeds from the raffle came to about £430, all of which was given to Ash Citizens Advice Bureau to help them continue their good work.
Anyone who has been in the main kitchen this week will have noticed that we now have a defibrillator. It is all ready to be used if anyone is in the unfortunate position to need it and all the instructions are there. It is apparently very straightforward but we are planning some training sessions so please get in touch if you would like to attend one.

The management committee met last week and a few plans are in place for improvements to the hall. All will be revealed in due course so keep an eye on this page for more details.
The first quiz night of the year is taking place this Friday, 19th January and is in aid of a local organisation; the Ash Citizens Advice Bureau. Please come and support them and have a fun evening out. The quiz starts at 7.30 and costs £5 per person. Teams of six or thereabouts. Bring your own food and drink to consume as the evening progresses. There will also be a raffle. No prizes so that all the money raised goes to the CAB.

The final totals from the fund-raising for the NSPCC over Christmas are in and the hall events raised just about £500 so well done to all involved.
The regular groups are back in the hall and we welcome a group of musicians rehearsing 60s music and a two new U3A groups – beginners bridge and a second table tennis group. Welcome to all.

Happy New Year to all users of the hall. We are looking forward to a busy year in 2018 with lots of events, groups continuing to make use of the facilities and new groups joining us for the first time.
The board games day and book sale on December 29th was a great success and we will be holding another book sale later this year so watch this space
The final totals are still being counted but we took over £150 on the day, which will be added to the proceeds from other events run by Dave Brown and sent off to the NSPCC soon.

A reminder of the next event which is the board games day and second hand book sale at the hall on Friday December 29th. A whole host of board games, old and new, will be available to play and a good choice of second hand books for adults and children will be on sale. Come and join us and enjoy a quiet break away from those Christmas films and the noisy shops. Dave Brown will be at the hall between 10and 12 on Monday 19th, Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th to sort books and will be very happy to take in any you would like to donate.

Work continues on the refurbishment of the lightning conductors outside the hall. The job should be finished today and we hopefully will all be safe in the next storm.
Dave Brown’s Christmas Quiz night on Friday was a huge success. Ten teams worked out the answers to a host of Christmas themed questions and identified Christmas number one hits from the last 50 years. In the interval we were treated to music by the Victoria Hall Ukulele Band, whose first performance was much enjoyed. £386 was raised for the NSPCC.

Last week was quiet in the hall but Christmas begins on Friday December 1st with Dave Brown’s Christmas Quiz Night. There are spaces available so please get in touch if you would like to bring a team.
The cost is £5 per person in aid of the NSPCC. 7.15 for a 7.30 start. Raffle. Bring your own food and drink. In the interval there will be entertainment from the Victoria Hall Ukulele Band. The band is newly formed and this will be their first public performance and a first for the hall.
There will be workmen around outside the hall this week. They are repairing and replacing the lightening conductors and should not impact any of the hall’s activities.

Last week saw the latest of Dave Brown’s charity quiz nights at the hall. Over £300 was raised for Help for Heroes so well done everyone who came. The next one is a Christmas Quiz on December 1st. See the events dairy for more details.
Last weekend the hall provided overnight accommodation for a large group of students taking part in the regional finals of a sport called Ultimate . We had not heard of Ultimate so went off to their website to find out about it. www.ukultimate.com “Ultimate is a fast-moving team sport enjoyed by millions of players the world over. Although frequently compared to sports like soccer or American Football, Ultimate has some unique features that set it apart. There are no referees. And it’s played with a flying disc.”

The management team have been having a clean up and a van load of rubbish collected from all over the hall has been taken away. All the cupboards have been checked and unused ones cleared. Every organisation using a cupboard in the hall now has a key and there is a spare in the hall for emergencies. In the front hall there are some cushions and we would like to know who they belong to. If no-one claims them they will be disposed of.

Hopefully the village has noticed that the clock has been repaired and is now showing the correct time and striking the right number of times! The problem turned out to be a small piece of wood from the structural timber which had worked loose and was catching in the mechanism.
If you are using the hall toilets please be aware that the temperature of the hot water has been turned up following health and safety advice. Warning notices are in place near the sinks.

Fifty new chairs arrived in the hall this week . They are padded and hopefully hall users will find them more comfortable than the old plastic ones.
The engineers are coming on Friday morning to have a look at the clock so it should be back to normal working by the weekend.
Remember there is a quiz night this Friday, the 20th, in aid of the RSPCA. Start time is 7.30 and cost is £5 per person. Teams of about six or come along and we will find you a team to join. Bring your own food and drink and a raffle prize if possible. No prizes – just for fun and to raise money.

At the AGM last week the committee was re-elected and a new member, Mick Hills from the Victoria Hall Ukulele Band has joined us.
At the committee meeting following the AGM the matter of the clock was raised and we are now in touch with the maintenance company who will come and look at it. We are aware that it seems to be somewhat erratic both in the time it is showing and the number of chimes.
It was decided to purchase some new padded chairs for the hall and they will be arriving in the next few weeks.

The heating is now on its winter timetable and the radiators are scheduled to switch on in advance of main hall booking times. The small halls can be supplemented with the gas heaters. Any problems please let us know.
Don’t forget our two events next week in aid of MacMillan Cancer Care. On Tuesday 26th we have a coffee morning from 10-12 and on Friday 29th , a quiz night, beginning at 7.30.
